The Letter S

Today our focus was not only on identifying the letter "S," but also knowing the sound that it makes.  Our read aloud story for today was titled The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.  Blown onto a farmyard fence, the main character, the spider, starts to spin a web. The other animals ask if she wants to play, but in every case the spider didn't answer. She was very busy spinning her web.  At the end of the story all of the spiders hard work pays off.  She catches her dinner in her web, which is a big juicy fly.  During center time the children cut out the letter "S" and then dipped a string in white paint and placed it on their letter.  This process made their letter look like a spiderweb.

For our second center the children floated S's.  They were each given three Skittle candies, a bowl, and a cup of water.  They poured a small amount of water in their bowl and placed their Skittles in the bowl in a triangle shape.  They then observed what happen and drew a picture to represent what they saw.  I'm not going to give away our secret, so if you want to know what happened to the floating S's please ask your child.
